Little Blue Elementary Teacher Receives Math Education Award
Little Blue Elementary teacher Rachel Barzee was selected as a University of Kansas Jedel Excellence in Mathematics Education Prime award recipient.
The Jedel Excellence in Mathematics Education Awards are bestowed to recognize exemplary K-12 math teaching. Established by the Jedel Family Foundation in 2018, the awards recognize outstanding mathematics teachers in the Greater Kansas City area. Recipients serve as leaders for their schools and ambassadors of mathematics for their community.
Barzee was selected as one of 16 from a total of 157 nominations from around the Kansas City metro for the award for her innovative instructional practices and the classroom strategies she uses to strengthen student understanding of mathematics. Barzee participated in a rigorous application process, which included an application, observation, and interview.
Barzee was presented with the award on May 8 by Don Hubbs of the Jedel Family Foundation; Dr. Steve Case, Director of the KU Center for STEM Learning; and Dr. Katrina Rothrock, Chair of the Jedel Excellence in Mathematics Education Awards. As part of the award, Barzee will receive a cash prize of $1000, will join the other award recipients at a banquet this summer, and will become a part of a learning and teaching fellowship made up of top math teachers from around the metro.
Jedel Excellence in Mathematics Education awards are given to classroom mathematics teachers who teach in charter, private, and public schools within these eight counties: Platte, Clay, Jackson, and Cass counties in Missouri and Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson, and Douglas counties in Kansas.
